Reading Power Responds Quickly to COVID-19
In March 2020, the North Chicago and Zion schools were closed by the COVID-19 crisis. Within days, Reading Power staff began custom-developing literacy learning materials and providing new books and basic school supplies to reinforce at-home learning..
Within weeks, we had a comprehensive Learning Resources page with more than 40 read-aloud videos and themed literacy learning packets. These materials were developed with the skill level and demographics of our Reading Power students in mind.
We have begun remote one-to-one tutoring with some students and are thrilled to report that they are fully engaged virtually as in person. And we are buying more new books than ever before in an effort to build home libraries of appropriate books.
Your donations are making all of this possible, and we are so grateful.
Our work will be even more important moving forward, as more children will need support catching up. All children deserve to reach their intellectual potential!

I have been a tutor/donor since the beginning and am a former board director. As a longtime tutor, I have seen Reading Power grow into a multi-school program with almost 200 tutors. I have watched our students' reading comprehension advance dramatically during each year and, equally important, seen their self-confidence and social skills grow significantly as well. The students clearly enjoy the program and look forward to the one-to-one learning experience."
